Here's an official press release we received from
Jonathan Hay
in response to our news item about him being the new manager for the
Wu-Tang Clan
:
LOUISVILLE, KY - June 20, 2003
"The Wu-Tang Clan needs some fresh blood and new ideas. Hay will bring those ideas to the table" - Wu-Tang Dynasty.
"The 9 generals from Shaolin have a new manager" -Foxxy's Weekly Hip-Hop Report.
Unfortunately, these headlines that have slithered their way across multitudes of fan bases and media publications are strictly rumors. To clarify, Jonathan Hay is not the manager of the Wu-Tang Clan, nor is he affiliated in any way to the Wu. Though Hay has been quoted, "If the opportunity arose I would assist the Wu in any way possible, however my primary focus right now is [the multi-platinum, Interscope recording group]
Days of the New
."
Hay has received countless emails, phone calls, media inquiries, radio station requests for interviews, website inquiries and Wu-Tang fan inquiries due to this imaginative hearsay. In addition to putting rumors to rest, Hay voiced some direction for the Wu, "
Metallica
's 'St. Anger' is #1 on Billboard because they went back to the roots of their sound. There needs to be an embraced unity within the Clan, that energy and excitement again; a support structure from within. I sincerely believe the Wu-Tang Clan is the most influential hip-hop group of all time. Hip Hop needs the Wu-Tang Clan's originality now more than ever, as hip-hop is in a state of emergency with its redundant emphasis on excessive money, cars, jewels, sex and all the materialistic possessions of this world."
The Clan's originality can be heard in many successful artists' styles and production. Since 1992,
The Rza
has been using the sorts of soul samples with sped vocals and chopped samples that are becoming more and more prevalent in today's hip-hop scene. The Rza especially has heavily influenced multi-platinum/diamond producers like
Kayne West
(
Jay-Z
,
Scarface
,
Cam'Ron
,
Fabolous
,
Trina
,
Talib Kweli
) and
Just Blaze
(
Big Pun
,
Busta Rhymes
, Jay-Z,
Nelly
,
Snoop Dogg
,
DMX
,
JadaKiss
,
Mariah Carey
).
Collectively and as solo artists the Wu-Tang Clan has sold over an astounding 18 million records. Credit should be given where it's due, as producers have bitten off the Wu and are feeding their families with the sound the Wu has created. Most every musician/artist is influenced by another but credit should be bestowed to the origin of the influence.
As of now, Hay's coveted ingenuity will not be intertwined with the workings of the Wu-Tang Clan. Hay is absolutely positive that "The Wu-Tang Dynasty will emerge."
"The Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothing to fuck with!!!" –Wu-Tang Clan
