Wu-Tang Clan ain't nothin' ta fuck with ran bells worldwide in the early '90s. But while each member of the Killa Bee battalion capitalized on the group's popularity, swarming the globe with their own solo visions, Masta Killa remained in the shadows. So 10 years later, while rumors of drama within the family circle the streets, the silent Clansman, possibly its most unlikely hero, believes he can resurrect the dynasty with his long-awaited debut album, No Said Date. But only time will tell if can he match or top the success of his Wu brethren.
The Source: Explain No Said Date, your album's title.
Masta Killa: I never want to give the public a release date and not follow through. I think we lose the people, the fans, everybody who's geared up for that date. When it's here, it's gon' be real.
TS: It's been over 10 years since the Wu's debut without so much as a single from you. People had the feeling you might not drop a solo album....
MK: Well I'm comin' from a group with basically an all-star cast. It's not easy to sit within and not want to do you own thing. But I'm all about winning, so if the design is to win and this is how we have it structured and that's what's winning, let's get it done. I'm a team player.
TS: It still seems a little risky to wait so long. Did you plan to go last the whole time?
MK: Well, you know the saying "The first shall be last and the last shall be first" ? I feel like I'm in a good position: I don't think it's taken anything away. If anything it adds a little curiosity to everything.
TS: Wu-Tang members are known for their individual chambers. What's yours like?
MK: I think I took a page from everybdoy's book and just brought it together. It's just like your number system. You go from one to nine and then everything is back to one again. If there's nine (Wu) members and I'm ninth, then I think I'm the completion of everything you've seen thus far.
TS: Do rumors of trouble within the Clan affect you at all?
MK: Nah, because you don't find families without problems. Nobody sees everything eye-to-eye, like a robot. Ain't no Cosby Show shit here. That's what the roundtable is meant for: to get together, discuss things, iron them out like men, move on to the next level. That's how the world is built. There's no problem with that.
TS: So there will be another Wu-Tang album?
MK: I would love nothing more than to do another family album because that's where it all started. I can't wait for that. I want that more than anything.
TS: Coming out solo from a legendary group like yours, do you feel any pressure releasing your album?
MK: I don't see myself as legendary. We made some music, a lot of people enjoyed it, I enjoyed it. I appreciate that people feel that way, It's a great honor, but it hasn't hit me like that. I'm basically just trying to add on. I feel that there's so much more to do, there are so many avenues and so much more going on in the world. Personally, I'm just blessed and thankful to be able to do what I'm doing.
