On a clear October afternoon
GZA
, dressed in Roc-A-Wear gear, lounged at a rented modest Midtown Manhattan studio. The studio, where he recorded some of his upcoming album, was the setting for a press listening session of his December release of Legend of a Liquid Sword.
In 1995 Wu-Tang Clan's 'head's' solo debut continued with the mythical aura his crew established with their initial set. The swordsman's Liquid Swords flowed flawlessly like a classic kung-fu flick.
After taking photos for VIBE's February issue the soft-spoken thinker kicked back and played some chess with
Masta Killa
.
As for the album, it begins with the same innocence, as did his debut. After a short introduction from a young boy voice Genius proceeds to provide some of his most visceral lyrics since '95. The
J. Waxx Garfield
produced Knock Knock, the album's first single, has the GZA on the hook blaring "Knock, knock who's that knocking on my door? / Abstract, commercial or hardcore!"
One of the many standouts is Fame, a cut done ala Labels, which uses proper names throughout its lyrics over some wicked piano riffs. With lines like "Ted Turner into a hoe" and "Jesse Owen him the money for the weed Bubba Sparxxx," Fame is undoubtedly one of the most creative songs to come out the Wu's vault.
