Stone Mecca was created sometime in the Spring of 2001, born to proud parents, Tra� James (producer) and Salakida (singer/songwriter). A special and funky child from birth, the sound that is Stone Mecca was raised and nurtured on a steady diet of soul and hip hop. With the combination of Salakidas soulful, dreamy vocals and Traes hard hitting, hypnotic beats, this duo has created an infectious and hypnotic sound that is timeless and current, channeling the good feelings of music past, without mimicking the greats that came before.
Growing up,
Tra�
and
Salakida
traveled similar paths on the road to Stone Mecca, both showing musical promise at early ages. Los Angeles native Tra� was playing drums by the time he was 9 years old, and counts guitar, bass and keys among his list of conquered instruments, while Salakida can remember singing her first solo at the age of 3, and was a published songwriter at 15. While in the Bay Area doing production work with Ant Banks, Tra� was introduced to Salakida, who at the time was a staff writer at Dwayne Wigginss Grassroots Entertainment Co. (Tony Toni Tone, Destinys Child). After recording a few demos, the two tossed around the idea of forming a group together, keeping in touch even after Tra� moved back to Los Angeles, with Salakida commuting in from Oakland to record and perform. It was during this time that Tra� came up with a name for their developing sound:
Stone Mecca
. With requests for performances increasing everyday, the possibility of putting out an album independently began to dance across their minds. Unbeknownst to the pair, Stone Mecca was making fans within as well as outside the entertainment business. After listening to one of their CDs and checking out a show,
RZA
of the Wu-Tang Clan was sufficiently moved enough to offer Stone Mecca a recording contract with his own imprint,
Wu-Music Group/Universal
.
Their debut project,
Stone Mecca:First Contact
is due out Summer 2006. Its an exploration of what its like balancing the everyday issues of love, money, society, and individuality in an ever changing world.
